Jamie Hogan

Most islanders and Maine residents know Jamie Hogan as a celebrated illustrator whose collaboration with Mitali Perkins, Rickshaw Girl, won a Jane Addams Children’s Book Award. They also have enjoyed reading her column as Arts Editor for the Island Times newspaper or benefited from her labors as chairwoman of the Education Committee for the Fifth Maine Regiment Museum’s board of trustees.

However, you might have missed the breaking news that Jamie is now also the author of her first book, a children’s book, Seven Days of Daisy. This evening, the Peaks Island Branch Library hosted a debut of this picture book at its weekly Story and Craft event for young readers.

Sitting in front of some of her stunning charcoal pencil, pastel, and collage on Canson-paper originals, Jamie shared her seven-year journey from creation to self publishing with a packed crowd of youngsters. After reading her book, Jamie launched the listeners into book creation mode, providing them with blank books and pastels on a table groaning with art supplies.

Seeing the children respond to Jamie’s reading reminded me that, as authors, we touch people around us in ways that we can’t always predict. So write! And pass the creativity on!
